2025 National Health Research Summit Report

The National Health Research Committee (NHRC) convened the 2025 National Research for Health Summit on 28–29 November 2025 in Gauteng, South Africa, as a strategic, multisectoral platform to assess progress, identify persistent and emerging challenges, and chart a forward looking agenda for strengthening the National Health Research System (NHRS) in the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, with particular emphasis on SDG-3.

Treatment Literacy Toolkit and Treatment Literacy Flip Chart

1.    Treatment Literacy Toolkit

The treatment literacy toolkit recognizes the importance of integrated care for clients who are living with chronic conditions such as HIV, Diabetes, Hypertension and other Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) that often overlap in high burden communities. It equips clients and communities to manage multiple, overlapping health conditions more effectively, improves adherence, prevents complications, and ensures that care is people-centered, not disease-centered.

Summary Report on Decentralised and Deinstitutionalised Management of Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis Services in South Africa

The country’s DR-TB model of care has evolved from mandatory hospitalisation to a fully decentralised, patient-centred approach. The 2011 national policy framework first enabled ambulatory and community-based treatment, while the 2019 update expanded eligibility for outpatient management, placing clinical need—rather than smear status—at the centre of decision-making. This progressive shift towards decentralised, integrated, and community-based care continues to guide national efforts to end TB.

Status of Implementation of the Nurse-Initiated Management of Drug- Resistant TB (NIMDR-TB) Programme in South Africa

The Nurse Initiated Management of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (NIMDR-TB) programme was established to support decentralised management of DR-TB in South Africa by training nurses to initiate and manage uncomplicated RR/MDR and now, Pre-XDR-TB at primary healthcare (PHC) and sub-district levels. This rapid review evaluates the programme’s implementation, achievements, challenges, and opportunities for strengthening its impact on DR-TB care.

End Tuberculosis (TB) Plan 1.0 April 2026 – March 2027

With ten years remaining to achieve the global goal of ending TB as a public health threat by 2035, the launch of the National End TB Plan marks a renewed commitment to accelerate progress. This first implementation plan outlines the key priorities and activities for the financial year April 2026 to March 2027 and provides a roadmap for coordinated action across the TB programme.

6MMD Health Care Worker Job Aid

A 6MMD Job Aid is a practical support tool designed to guide healthcare workers and program staff in the effective implementation of Six-Month Multi-Month Dispensing (6MMD) of antiretroviral therapy (ART). It provides step-by-step instructions, eligibility criteria, and key considerations to ensure that stable patients receive up to six months of medication in a single visit. The job aid typically outlines clinical requirements, documentation procedures, and counselling points.

Patient Safety Incident Reporting and Learning Podcasts

The two podcasts were developed to support the implementation of the National Guideline for Patient Safety Incident Reporting and Learning. The podcast ‘What is a Patient Safety Incident and how to manage it’ gives an overview of the content of the National Guideline and the podcast ‘From blame to learning’ encourages staff to report patient safety incidents and learn from it to prevent future harm.
