The National Health Research Committee (NHRC) convened the 2025 National Research for Health Summit on 28–29 November 2025 in Gauteng, South Africa, as a strategic, multisectoral platform to assess progress, identify persistent and emerging challenges, and chart a forward looking agenda for strengthening the National Health Research System (NHRS) in the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, with particular emphasis on SDG-3.

The country’s DR-TB model of care has evolved from mandatory hospitalisation to a fully decentralised, patient-centred approach. The 2011 national policy framework first enabled ambulatory and community-based treatment, while the 2019 update expanded eligibility for outpatient management, placing clinical need—rather than smear status—at the centre of decision-making. This progressive shift towards decentralised, integrated, and community-based care continues to guide national efforts to end TB.

Status of Implementation of the Nurse-Initiated Management of Drug- Resistant TB (NIMDR-TB) Programme in South Africa

The Nurse Initiated Management of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (NIMDR-TB) programme was established to support decentralised management of DR-TB in South Africa by training nurses to initiate and manage uncomplicated RR/MDR and now, Pre-XDR-TB at primary healthcare (PHC) and sub-district levels. This rapid review evaluates the programme’s implementation, achievements, challenges, and opportunities for strengthening its impact on DR-TB care.

Saving Mothers, Saving Babies Reports

The reports were prepared by a committee that was established by the Minister of Health to assess the quality and practice of perinatal care and monitor outcomes in saving mothers and babies for the entire country. The committee also supports the national Department of Health with the formulation of guidelines, and make recommendations that will improve perinatal and neonatal outcomes based on clinical evidence.
