The Antenatal HIV Sentinel Survey (ANCHSS) has been conducted in South Africa since 1990, annually between 1990 and 2015 and biennially since 2015, with the main aim of monitoring HIV epidemic trends among 15 to 49-year-old pregnant women attending antenatal clinics. The 2019 survey was the 28th survey conducted in South Africa.

This report presents findings from South Africa. The study was implemented from February 2020 – February 2021, and ethics approvals were granted by the World Health Organization (WHO) Ethics Review Committee and by the South African Human Sciences Research Council (SAHSRC). The study is part of a multi-country study commissioned by WHO and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The study sought to hear directly from women, and those who influence them – health professionals, partners, family members and friends – about their exposure to and experience of formula product marketing.

The development of health research priorities is part of the mandate of the National Health Research Committee (NHRC). Research priorities will ensure that health research agendas and research resources focus on priority health problems. The NHRC in identifying health research priorities, took into consideration the followings: The burden of disease. The cost-effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of disease. The availability of human and institutional resources for the implementation of an intervention at the level closest to the affected communities.
