Addressed to general health workers, the book uses clear definitions, analogies, examples, checklists, sample forms and calculations, and abundant illustrations to demystify the methods of epidemiology and show how they can work in concrete situations. Particular emphasis is placed on the simple knowledge and skills needed to collect and then use epidemiological data to monitor health problems commonly found in developing countries. The book has 14 chapters.

The Tertiary and Quaternary Hospital Level EML, which constitutes a list of essential medicines for approved indication, is ratified and distributed quarterly following NEMLC approval. It guides the selection, procurement and use of medicines at Tertiary and Quaternary level health establishments in the public sector in South Africa.

A national response is required to complement the development of a global plan, as articulated in the WHO’s draft resolution EB134/37 “Combating antimicrobial resistance including antibiotic resistance”, adopted by theWorld Health Assembly in May 2014. The overuse of antimicrobials is driving resistance.
