This course is designed to orient healthcare workers to the Adult Primary Care clinical decision support tool, which is based on South African Public Health Care guidelines and policies. It provides a comprehensive approach to integrated care.

This course contains 27 cases and 3 activities. This course is designed to be done over a number of sittings, so we suggest that you set aside about 2 hours at a time and work through the cases and activities over the course of a few weeks.

2023 ART Clinical Guidelines Update

The 2023 ART guideline introduces simplified ART provision and harmonised methods of management of children, adolescents and adults, as well as pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS, TB and other common opportunistic infections.

The guidelines also provide guidance on the use of Dolutegravir (DTG) dispersible tablets for children from 3kg and 4 weeks old.

The guidelines have been revised with the Differentiated Models of Care SOPs to ensure simultaneous consideration and alignment of clinical, adherence and service delivery updates.

These updates will empower clinicians with the knowledge to provide quality, comprehensive services to the public.

Course objectives:

Initiate, switch or re-initiate adults, adolescents, pregnant women and children on ART to optimised first- and second-line regimens.
Monitor and manage VL results in the era of DTG.
Understand the role of resistance testing.
Provide care in an integrated and patient-centred manner.
Optimise clinic visit schedules to promote continued engagement in care.
Optimise care for a mother living with HIV to minimise vertical transmission.
Manage the HIV-exposed infant to minimise vertical transmission.

Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) - 2023

The Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) is a strategy implemented in many low- and middle-income countries to improve the quality of care offered to sick children under 5, thereby improving the under-5 mortality rates in these countries. South Africa adopted the IMCI strategy in 1998. It has been adapted for the South African population and is widely used in primary health care settings across the country.

This course serves to optimise and standardise IMCI training for all health workers involved in the management of sick children.

Learning objectives:

Describe the three components of the IMCI strategy.
Understand and apply the principles that IMCI uses to provide healthcare to sick children.
Improve confidence and accuracy of the assessment and management of common childhood illnesses in primary care settings.
Learn to counsel caregivers on identifying signs of severe illness and on home management of their child’s illness.
Understand the elements of promotive care that are integrated into the IMCI consultation.

This training is designed for pre-service (undergraduate) and in-service training of nursing and medical students, nurses, doctors as well as therapists and pharmacists with an interest in the management of sick children.

This course can be used as a stand-alone, providing theoretical basis and video application of the knowledge and skills required to provide appropriate health care to sick children under 5. It should ideally be complemented by practical IMCI training, facilitated by an in-person trainer.

COVID-19 Vaccination Training for Health Workers

As announced by the President of the Republic of South Africa, the country is preparing to embark on a massive programme to roll out the COVID-19 vaccination. This will be the largest and most complex logistical undertaking in our country, and it requires active involvement of various stakeholders, forums and task teams. The training task team is responsible for giving the vaccinators adequate knowledge and skills to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine. Therefore, the National Department of Health (NDoH) has teamed up with the South African Vaccination and Immunisation Centre at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, and other support partners, to package a short course, with tools, to prepare vaccinators to implement the COVID-19 vaccination.

Update on Switching Stable 1st and 2nd Line ART Patients to DTG Containing Regimen (TLD Update)

To strengthen the capacity of the health sector to deliver high-quality, comprehensive health services, South Africa adopted the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations to include Dolutergravir (DTG), as the preferred anti-retroviral drug for first and second line regimens. The 2019 HIV clinical guidelines have been revised to include a new formulation of the fixed dose combination (FDC) of Tenofovir (TDF) 300 mg + Lamivudine (3TC) 300 mg + Dolutegravir (DTG) 50 mg (TLD) for all eligible adults, adolescents and children over 10 years of age and weighing 20kg or more. The principal goal of ART is to attain and maintain viral suppression, which will decrease morbidity and mortality from HIV, as well as improve the quality of life for clients living with HIV. These updates will empower clinicians with the knowledge to provide quality, comprehensive services to the public.

This is a self-facilitated online course. You complete it at your own pace and in your own time. It should take you about three to six hours in total to complete and will be open for six weeks from registration to give sufficient opportunity to complete the course. Course objectives

This online training programme is designed to ensure that all HCWs have appropriate baseline antimicrobial and infection prevention and control (IPC) competency, to complement existing knowledge and skills by:

Increasing the level of understanding of AMR and IPC in all HCWs to engender best practices in their daily setting, regularly and consistently.
Ensuring the appropriate use of antimicrobials to reduce resistance, adverse events, and improve patient outcomes.
Ensuring understanding of the use and implementation of appropriate IPC measures to prevent transmission of microbes (including multi-drug resistant microbes) and reduce infections.
Ensuring appropriate use of laboratory services to optimize the use of antimicrobials.
Ensuring that HCWs understand and appreciate the multidisciplinary nature of antimicrobial stewardship, and the roles of each member in the stewardship team.

The target audience for this course are all HCWs registered with the following councils: Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA); South African Nursing Council (SANC); South African Veterinary Council (SAVC); South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
