The Adult Primary Care (APC) COVID-19 Guidance for health workers in primary health care facilities provides a comprehensive approach to the primary care of COVID-19 patients. It has been developed using approved clinical policies and guidelines issued by the National Department of Health and is intended for use by all health care practitioners working at primary care level in South Africa as a clinical decision-making tool. This new version is aligned with version 5 of NDoH/NICD Clinical Management of Suspected or Confirmed COVID-19 (24 Aug 2020) and the PHC STG/EML, 2018 with an emphasis on antimicrobial stewardship. Expanded content and updates include: Generic guidance for a ‘selective/prioritised testing approach’ as well as a ‘routine testing approach’ Management of a patient with COVID-19 symptoms who is not eligible for a test Emphasis on care of diabetic patients Symptom-based approaches to cough, throat, fever, headache, diarrhoea and body pain Updated isolation and quarantine durations Updated HCW exposure algorithms Palliative and end-of life care guidance for COVID-19 patient Guidance on safe handling of the deceased COVID-19 patient Guidance on correctly completing a death certificate
